<br />
Was looking through a massive pile of drawings, idle doodles, things without a purpose or reason behind them and thought it a shame that they would never see the light of day. So presented here for you today is a collection of rogue characters! Yes, I did go a bit overboard on the colouring, but it was fun. The colours appear even brighter and more ridiculous being viewed online, they lose some subtlety (like the difference between the two light blue backgrounds). Enjoy the headache and/or portraits.<br /><br />Might even do another set of these, I scanned in over a hundred old doodles and there are still more.<br />

Just found this image of a card from last year, the only one I have remembered to copy thus far! Had completely forgotten about it... which is why I should really keep a record.<br /><br />

Particularly like the energy of some of the fight scenes and the Siberian-looking dwarfs (dwarves?) at the bottom left.<br />
<br />
Would like to develop a story about dwarves (ok now I have stared at that word too long and they both look wrong), their pragmatism and industry is to be admired, and the idea of underground cities stirs something deep in the subconscious.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Which means I get to post images from it here! The book is called <i>The Ugh Factor</i> and it's about emo teenagers struggling against the soulless and creatively dead pop music industry, something I feel we can all relate to.<br />
<br />
I'm especially pleased with how the cover illustration turned out, considering I had no idea what I was doing when I began them. Inky brush textures save the day once again...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBYMh90JiAU/UyhyBy9AhzI/AAAAAAAAAew/G-ekd3PET38/s1600/ugh+cover+web+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XBYMh90JiAU/UyhyBy9AhzI/AAAAAAAAAew/G-ekd3PET38/s1600/ugh+cover+web+1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It also has a dog in. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tBEcdGxegag/UyhyBnmlZcI/AAAAAAAAAes/-KJRqNCQg04/s1600/ugh+cover+web+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tBEcdGxegag/UyhyBnmlZcI/AAAAAAAAAes/-KJRqNCQg04/s1600/ugh+cover+web+2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And here are some of the interior illustrations!<br />

A homage to my local comics retailer, Megacity Comics!<br />

<br />
It was fun playing with a more conventional, mainstream layout, while retaining the kinds of elements I like most in comics. Couple of rough design choices due to the speed at which it was produced, but there are also lots of experimental bits which I really like.Euan Cookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05988272554804412332noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5361005963700629046.post-68335160688840069842013-05-16T21:24:00.002+01:002013-05-16T21:26:27.340+01:00<br />

Was busy at the start of the year working on illustrating a couple of books for teenagers, based on Shakespeare stories. Just got a couple of advance copies of <i>Romeo and Juliet in Las Vegas</i> and <i>Macbeth and the Creature from Hell</i> in the mail - to celebrate, here are a few of the interior illustrations from the two books! It shouldn't tax your knowledge of the classics too hard to work out which characters are which. Trying to present such well known characters in a fresh and interesting way was actually a lot of fun. 70s flavour research also led me to such incredible finds as <a href="http://plaidstallions.com/">plaidstallions.com</a>!<br />
<br />
For more snippets you can check out <a href="http://www.arenaillustration.com/blog/?p=3606">Arena's blog post about them</a>, or hunt down a copy once they are out!<br />

You can find a sneak peek on the i+P site, and it's on sale in comic shops across the whole wide London (also probably comic fairs elsewhere, editor <a href="http://scribblehound.com/">David O'Connell</a> gets around). You can even find it in Foyles! Anyway, it's full of great stuff.<br />
<br />
Below are a couple of bits from my strip <i>The Fisher Girl and the Crab</i>, including a panel I call 'man walking like a crab in a forest'.<br /><br />Update: My story in i+P <a href="http://paulgravett.com/index.php/articles/article/tls">picked out by Paul Gravett in his best comics of 2012 article</a>! Madness.<br />

<br />
These are the first two pages of an appropriately spooky short story I started for the Observer Graphic Short Story Prize.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iBetaB-B2BA/UJENeOyxymI/AAAAAAAAAL4/76GsXIdj3ig/s1600/p1+web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iBetaB-B2BA/UJENeOyxymI/AAAAAAAAAL4/76GsXIdj3ig/s1600/p1+web.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gq5HCeaKioU/UJENfHIo0SI/AAAAAAAAAMA/lYZF4GQm3Xk/s1600/p2+web.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gq5HCeaKioU/UJENfHIo0SI/AAAAAAAAAMA/lYZF4GQm3Xk/s1600/p2+web.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The style is sort of an extension of what I was previously working on for <a href="http://inkpluspaper.com/2012/10/issue-3-sneak-peek-euan-cook/">ink+PAPER</a>, and some of the results on the second page look rather nice. Another result of working fast and loose on these pages are a couple of horrible mistakes - spot them if you can! Also keep your eyes peeled for issue#3 of i+P, in which I have a story. It will probably warrant another blog post when it gets launched but, just in case, you have been warned.Euan Cookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05988272554804412332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5361005963700629046.post-54280194029678660862012-07-28T22:43:00.000+01:002012-07-28T22:43:08.182+01:00Here is a little thing from the other day that is quite nice. Playing with rendering style and colour for a certain project.<br />

Here are some snippets of something that may eventually grow into some <i>graphical short stories </i>(comics).<br />

Hey internet. Realised that, as usual, it has been an age since the last post. In that time I <i>have </i>been working, really. Also realised that blog posts work much better in smaller, more related bursts, so I am about to update with a couple of seperate ones.<br />
<br />
So the <span id="goog_1836876646"></span><a href="http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/"><i>Forbidden Planet<span id="goog_1836876647"></span></i></a> bloggers decided to run a competition to prove that there are still adult fiction illustrators out there, in response to a certain Jonathan Cape employee's comments in <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/where-have-all-the-book-illustrators-gone-6291792.html">this article</a>. This is my entry for it. They haven't been judged yet, so who knows, you may be looking at a winner! #falseconfidence<br />

Here are some rough character samples wot I done. Working on them made me feel a bit like being back in school, drawing moody teenage girls all day, but they started to get a bit more interesting towards the end.<br />
<br />
Anyways - rough development work, away!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I decided to take up the challenge of telling this bizarre tale in as few panels as possible - as a result it may not make any sense at all. Anyone looking for clarification can consult the excellent <i>Virago Book of Fairy Tales</i>, where I discovered this traditional story of talking gourds, shapshifting crabs and arranged marriage in the heart of rural India.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It is nice to draw some characters within a sustained narrative - the immediate attachment you feel to them, the way you can read emotion in a sequence of panels feels really liberating.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Here is some recent sketchbook work to prove that I can still draw - honestly! I was, like, using my left hand or something on the foxes...<br />

Here are some doodles of what may happen if you succumb to <i>The Bite Of The Were-Fox </i>(note: not actually the title of an upcoming book or anything).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AYlpn3Tiiac/T2C7ZkT9lrI/AAAAAAAAAH4/pMtcGSXvGkM/s1600/werefox1.gif" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AYlpn3Tiiac/T2C7ZkT9lrI/AAAAAAAAAH4/pMtcGSXvGkM/s1600/werefox1.gif" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RmlC17_t6Wg/T2C7aVb66EI/AAAAAAAAAH8/uemqXAqUxwc/s1600/werefox2.gif" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RmlC17_t6Wg/T2C7aVb66EI/AAAAAAAAAH8/uemqXAqUxwc/s1600/werefox2.gif" /></a></div><br />
<br />
During autumn/winter of last year I kept a visual journal, which was; <br />
a. lots of fun,<br />
b. surprisingly time consuming and<br />
c. extremely helpful in getting a grasp on sequential imagery and using brush & ink.<br />
It is definitely an exercise that I would like to repeat. I think that some of the experiments were really successful and the super-relaxed drawing style is something I probably don't spend enough time playing with, so it's about time some images made it on to the internet. Here are some choice entries from this sporadic and neurotic little sketchbook.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It was an interesting experiment, the whole of which doesn't hang together that well due to long periods of time between working on each page, however there were some interesting developments along the way that make me want to create some more coherent comic strip narratives.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Have a few things going that I don't want to put up online until they are finished, in the meantime here is a sketch of a character inspired by Angela Carter's excellent modern fairytale <i>The Bloody Chamber.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_h6EdJS9Qi4/TxQ6AsY0nYI/AAAAAAAAAF8/nga9VkpfqoY/s1600/carmilla.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_h6EdJS9Qi4/TxQ6AsY0nYI/AAAAAAAAAF8/nga9VkpfqoY/s1600/carmilla.gif" /></a></div>Euan Cookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05988272554804412332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5361005963700629046.post-51944673706960897022011-12-01T15:35:00.000+00:002011-12-01T15:48:57.323+00:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Have a few character pieces! That's right, my drawings of children have sprouted into some illustrations. These character studies are of Freya - the main character from Francesca Simon's new book <i><span id="goog_314697601"></span><a href="http://www.francescasimon.com/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=177">The Secret <span id="goog_314697602"></span>Army</a></i>. I have also been working on some black and white interior illustrations based on the book which will get put up here when I have finished a decent run of them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The first image needs a bit of explanation - Freya is realising that her legs are beginning to turn to ivory. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PhWcpnoORiU/Tteh228UhaI/AAAAAAAAAFs/OSVea2oFA-E/s1600/freya+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PhWcpnoORiU/Tteh228UhaI/AAAAAAAAAFs/OSVea2oFA-E/s640/freya+1.jpg" width="506" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I think I will start posting smaller/single image updates to keep it all flowing a bit better.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">First up is a portfolio piece, a book cover illustration for dark & mystical teenage girl fiction set in Venice. Part of the reason keeping this blog updated is taking so long for me is that it takes a good few weeks after finishing it before I can really like a piece of work again - this one is from about a week ago.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-El4AU6QRKoo/TteiTKpj0DI/AAAAAAAAAF0/DW3aXG5LxJk/s1600/venice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="402" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-El4AU6QRKoo/TteiTKpj0DI/AAAAAAAAAF0/DW3aXG5LxJk/s640/venice.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> .</div><div style="text-align: left;">Next, here are some children! Thirteen of them to be exact. The under-18 area of my sketchbook has been sorely lacking recently.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DF0CGQKzq4A/Trby5_jxKhI/AAAAAAAAADI/Ta72xk8eUVc/s1600/children+development001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DF0CGQKzq4A/Trby5_jxKhI/AAAAAAAAADI/Ta72xk8eUVc/s640/children+development001.jpg" width="443" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> .</div><div style="text-align: left;">Finally, I wasn't even sure about posting this, but here a couple of pages messing around with comics for a four-page short story/descriptive exercise. I really haven't done anything comic related and sustained beyond three or four panels since I was fourteen (or younger?!), so these are definitely the early stages of experimental, and some of the dialogue is atrocious, but hopefully there is something in them that will justify getting it finished.</div><br />

Good news is it's all finished now, heading back home with a working computer so hopefully the blog posting will spark back into life shortly! On a related note, my website is now finished, just need to get on the tutor responsible for hosting them at uni.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Just wanted to stick up a couple of images I made for an exhibition running in <a href="http://www.thepoly.org/">the Poly</a> alongside Falmouth film graduates work at <a href="http://www.pixel8filmfestival.co.uk/">Pixel8 film festival</a> this friday, saturday and sunday. Come along for an evening of excellent illustration and falmouth filmaking.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The first one is for a film called Pig, where featuring a man ventures into the dark subconscious of his girlfriend. The second is for Gillez Pyskessa, exploring isolation and disconnectedness with modern Cornwall through the eyes of an aging fisherman.</span><br />
